The UN's nuclear watchdog Board of Governors has passed a resolution accusing Iran of noncompliance with its nuclear nonproliferation commitments, marking the first such resolution in 20 years, and has referred the matter to the UN Security Council amid ongoing tensions in the region. The IAEA expressed "grave concern" over Iran's lack of access to key nuclear facilities since a US-Israeli war against Iran began in June 2025, which included attacks on major sites like Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. Iran has condemned the resolution as politically motivated, asserting that ongoing military operations prevent safe access to its nuclear sites while maintaining it has not halted its safeguards obligations.

The International Atomic Energy Agency's Board of Governors has approved a resolution to report Iran to the UN Security Council for violating non-proliferation obligations, marking the first such resolution in 20 years, with 23 countries voting in favor and three opposing. The IAEA suspects Iran has around 400kg (881lbs) of highly enriched uranium, potentially enough for 10 nuclear weapons, and has voiced serious concerns over Iran's lack of cooperation with inspections following damage to its nuclear facilities from US and Israeli strikes. Despite the resolution, action from the UN Security Council is deemed unlikely due to vetoes from Iran's allies, Russia and China.
