Sudan's health system is on the brink of collapse due to global funding cuts, particularly after the closure of USAID, which is the largest donor, leading to the closure of numerous healthcare facilities. More than 33 million people require medical assistance amid ongoing conflict that began in April 2023, with MSF reporting a 22.5% increase in patient admissions in central Darfur from January to April 2026 compared to the previous year. Additionally, Sudan experienced 1,620 deaths from attacks on medical facilities in 2025, representing 82% of all healthcare-related deaths globally, while more than 19.5 million people are facing crisis levels of food insecurity.
Sudan's healthcare system is in crisis due to dwindling international aid, with Doctors Without Borders reporting that about 37 percent of health facilities are out of service and the UN's response plan is only 41 percent funded. The ongoing war, which has killed at least 59,000 people and displaced around 14 million since April 2023, is exacerbating the situation, leading to a greater number of patients relying on fewer services. MSF emphasizes the need for sustained funding, as global humanitarian aid has decreased by 35.8 percent since last year, and significant cuts have affected food rations and protection programs for refugees.
